Masterbatch

Interesting Facts about Masterbatch

Plastic products become an integral part of our everyday life; the colour for the plastics gets from the MasterbatchMasterbatch is an additive material that usually comes in the solid state like small pellets that are used in the plastic industry for adding the colour or any other properties such as strength, antibacterial, conductivity, anti-static etc., to the plastics. Masterbatch is a mixture of concentrated pigments or additives, which is manufactured during a heat process. Carrier resin along with different types of additives is mixed extensively during a heat process, and then cooled to make into granular shape.

Masterbatch comes in different types of colours like black, white, and coloured masterbatches and in different features like anti-microbial masterbatchanti-static masterbatch, additive masterbatch, special effect masterbatch and filler masterbatch.

Reasons for using Masterbatch:

  • Masterbatch comes in pellet form, making it far less messy to store, move and manipulate than powdered pigments or any other types of additives.
  • It is simpler to feed and handle colour concentrates during the manufacturing process when masterbatch is used.
  • The pigment/additives can become airborne during manufacturing processes, potentially contaminating adjacent manufacturing lines.
  • Pigment/Additives does not disperse well on its own, but masterbatch is designed and engineered for optimal dispersion in a polymer matrix, contributing to excellent distribution throughout the final product.
  • Less pigment/additives is required when housed in masterbatch than when added in raw, powdered form due to dispersion chemistry.

 Where we can use Masterbatch?

The use for Masterbatch is for its industrial advantages, the following are the main application area’s for Masterbatch in industries:

  • Extrusion coating
  • Films
  • BOPP
  • Injection moulding
  • Blow moulding
  • Non-woven
  • Multi-filaments
  • Thermo-forming and pipes, and so on…

What are the advantages of using Masterbatch?

  1. Masterbatch are extremely cost-effective.
  2. Masterbatch offers better colour consistency of products.
  3. Masterbatch allows for better control of opacity and transparency of coloured products.
  4. Additive ingredients are included in masterbatch in predetermined ratios, minimizing the chance of variance during processing.
  5. Masterbatch can contain additive concentrates that deliver desirable traits such as UV stability, antioxidants, antibacterialanti-static, etc.
